Skukuza Rest Camp - Information

The name of the camp was changed in 1936 from Sabie Bridge, or just Reserve. The Tsonga name for James Stevenson-Hamilton, the park's first warden, is the inspiration behind the name of the Skukuza Rest Camp in Kruger National Park. When translated literally, it means "he who sweeps clean," alluding to his expulsion of the local population to create space for the Park. Many fascinating artefacts can be found at the Stevenson-Hamilton Memorial Museum. One of the most well-known is the knife ranger Harry Wolhuter used to kill a lion by himself and escape certain death. Skukuza is the main administrative hub and rest camp in the Kruger National Park. It is located on the Sabie River's southern banks and is home to a variety of fascinating birds and amazing plant life.
Luxurious Riverside Bungalow Lodging These opulent, more contemporary-styled bungalows are located along the river. This Kruger National Park lodging has air conditioning and TVs with a small selection of DSTV channels. Every bungalow has a double bed installed. There are two types of semi-luxury flats available for guests to select from: ones with a common kitchen and a view of the river, or ones without. Cottage Accommodation for Families Known as Waterkant 2, the family cottage is a component of the Waterkant Guesthouse complex. The cottage has four bedrooms and a fully functional kitchen. Each of the bedrooms has two single beds in it. There is a sitting area, a bathroom and a view of the river in the cottage. Accommodations in Guest Cottages At Skukuza Rest Camp, guest cottages are 15 x 4 or 6-bed apartments with fully functional kitchens and typically several bathrooms. Accommodations in Guest Houses Four well-located guest homes in Skukuza provide lodging for larger parties of up to 12 people. Each of the four air-conditioned bedrooms in the flats has two single beds and an attached bathroom with a bathtub, sink, shower and toilet. Toilet paper and towels are supplied. Limited DSTV channels are available in the guest houses. While ABSA Guesthouse accommodates 12 visitors in 6 bedrooms, Moni, Nyathi, and Waterkant guest homes each sleep 8 people in 4 beds. The dining area, living room, kitchen, and balcony with braai (barbeque) equipment make up the recreation area. The stove, oven, refrigerator/freezer, sink, crockery and cutlery are all fully furnished in the kitchen.
Along this road, sightings of lions are common. Look for the Thick-tailed Bush Baby, which climbs trees to find gum, and the Fruit Bat, which resides beneath the shop's eaves at night. Skukuza is a big, bustling camp, yet it has a great variety of birds. You may anticipate seeing kingfishers, green pigeons, purple-crested louries, flycatchers, and many other fascinating bird species on your safari in the Kruger National Park.
The drive to Lower Sabie, which traces the densely forested bank of the Sabie River and is home to Bushbuck, Leopard, and a few Nyala, is arguably the most gratifying game drive. On this safari through the Kruger National Park, observe the hippos relaxing in the river and the crocodiles basking on the sandbanks. Along this scenic path, lions can often be seen. The uncommon tree dassie, brown hyena, bushbuck, and bushpig can all be found in the coastal forest. On a safari through the Kruger National Park, it is easy to spot all five of the Big Five in the area around Skukuza. Vervet and warthog monkeys live in the camp and can cause trouble if guests leave their belongings unattended. Fruit Bats, Genet, and Thick-tailed Bush Babies can all be observed in the camp at night. When on a safari in the Kruger National Park, the riverbank of the camp is an excellent location to search for buffalo and hippopotamus, particularly early in the morning. In the dry nama-karoo surrounding the Darlington Dam, one can find Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest, Springbok, Buffalo, and Black Rhinos. We'll introduce Cheetah and Wild Dog after this area is consolidated.
