Leopard Safari

Sabi Sands - South Africa

Safari Rangers operate a unique Leopard Safari in the Sabi Sand Reserve designed to ensure you spend your time tracking, viewing and learning all about South Africa's most stealthy and elusive predator.

Our Leopard Safari is for anyone who has an extra fascination of the African Leopard or has been on safari a few times without ever seeing a Leopard. Based on our Combo Safari option the daily 'off road' 4 x 4game viewing drives and walking safaris primarily focus on tracking and viewing the Leopards of Sabi Sands.

We have currently recorded 13 Leopards, 9 Leopards are resident and have been named: Mafufanjan, White cloths child, Newington, Kaalkol, Seseke (just had 2 cubs), Seshuwana, Nyaleti, Ntsemba, Ntjila. The other 4 Leopards are more of a challenge to view.

We are able to provide our unique Leopard Safari due to the following:

A) Leopards are essentially shy and solitary animals. They are nocturnal hunters and spend their days lying in secluded spots within their territories. It's due to us knowing their territories we are able to increase your chances of viewing Leopards.

B) South Africa's winter season, referred to as the dry season, kicks in from April to August. It hardly rains throughout this time and the park is transformed into a brown and almost barren landscape. The grass is low, the bushes and trees lose their leaves and as a result, one can have an unobstructed view through the bush, making it easier to track and view Leopards especially at night.

C) Over the years Leopards in the Sabi Sands have become accustomed to the4 x 4 Land Rovers permitting us to follow them 'off road' through the bush, even when they are hunting. It's all 'close up' Leopard game viewing, mostly only a few metres away.

The ultimate in Leopard viewing is to see a 'Leopard Kill' where one see's a Leopard pounce on it's pray, kill it, carry it up a tree and commence eating. Leopards have the second highest kill rate (70%) amongst predators so with concentrated Leopard viewing and with a bit a luck, it may be possible to see a Leopard Kill.

Our Leopard Safari is all about providing you with the opportunity to spend 4 or 5 days with the Leopards of Sabi Sands; an incredible experience.

Although we use all the resources at our disposal to make sure you encounter Leopards, it is not 100% guaranteed.
