Bird Watching Safari
Kruger Park - South Africa

Safari Rangers operate a unique range of Bird Watching Safari tours to South Africa's Kruger National Park; designed to fulfil every ‘birders’ pursuit for fantastic bird watching in Southern Africa.

Our Kruger Park Bird Watching Safaris are for couples and groups of birders who are looking at flying into South Africa over a weekend, bird watching during the week and then flying out the following weekend. It's very much all about enjoying up to a weeks worth of concentrated bird watching in the North of Kruger Park with everything laid on - perfect!

Based on our Classic Kruger Park Safari tours our Bird Watching Safaris are acknowledged for being a highly rewarding experience for all birding enthusiasts, from the dedicated 'twitcher' to those just becoming familiar with birds.

Southern Africa has over 900 recorded species of bird with over 800 occurring in South Africa of which just over 500 species occur in the Kruger Park. It's the parks unique diverse eco-systems ranging from forest to bushveld-savannah to montane grasslands that supports the parks fascinating variety of birds: Hornbills, Eagles, Starlings, Vultures, Rollers, Bee-eaters and Shrikes.

With such a variety and concentration of birds in a relatively small area and with the added excitement of coming across big game; it's no wonder the Kruger Park is recognised as one of the leading avi-destinations in Africa.

The far North of the park (Pafuri and Punda Maria regions) is regarded as one of the birding Mecca's of the country with many regional rarities to be found, yet birding throughout the entire park is excellent. To see our list of the more sought after species click here

Eagles are common: Bateleur, Martial, Black-chested Snake, Brown Snake, African Hawk, African Fish and Tawny are all regularly seen and in the summer months: Wahlberg's, Steppe, Lesser Spotted.

The Kruger Parks numerous waterhole's make for excellent birding, while the rest camps and picnic sites are exceptionally rewarding. Numbers are greatest in summer (September - March) when all the migrants are present.

Birders can also look forward to pursuing the Big Six: Saddle-billed Stork, Kori Bustard, Martial Eagle, Lappet-faced Vulture, Pel's Fishing-Owl and Ground Hornbill. The Big Six represent a subjective grouping of the six most desired birds that visitors to the park want to see. The six species are also by and large restricted to Kruger and other near by conservation areas, as human encroachment and habitat degradation have reduced their ranges.

It makes sense for any ‘birder’ who is ready to enjoy bird watching in Africa, to visit South Africa and head straight for the Northern regions of Kruger Park on one of our exciting guided Birding Safaris.
